Switching to a Healthier Routine

Nutrition and healthcare experts are always encouraging the public to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle, but many people still overindulge and struggle to keep at a healthy weight. Although weight is an important component of a healthy lifestyle, it’s also worth remembering that your mental health and overall well being are just as essential to a happy and balanced life. If you have found yourself drifting into unhealthy habits during the COVID-19 lockdown or have been wanting to take steps towards a healthier routine for longer than that, here are some factors to keep in mind to help you make the switch.

Plan Your Meals

The idea of planning out meals and sticking to a stricter diet might be off-putting to a lot of people, but the truth is that planning what you’re going to eat during the week can be incredibly helpful when trying to lose weight. It is also useful to do if you’re trying to maintain a healthier diet overall. To avoid repetition, challenge yourself to try out two new recipes each week. There are plenty of healthy and delicious meals you can prepare, and the more you eat of these, the better it will feel when you allow yourself to have a treat. If you want to improve your digestion, too, try a probiotic drink.

Sleep Cycle

A good night’s sleep is essential to a healthy lifestyle. It affects the way your body recovers from the day, how it digests, and your mental health, too. Although occasionally your sleep may be interrupted, you should aim to get eight hours of sleep a night as recommended. Oversleeping can also contribute to feelings of grogginess and lethargy. To help settle into a regular sleep cycle, avoid watching TV or using tablets and laptops; in the hour before you go to bed, do something relaxing like reading a book. Try to be in bed at the same time every night where possible, and set your alarm for the same time each morning.

Exercise

Your body needs exercise to stretch and strengthen your muscles as well as to burn off excess fat. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym every day, as that isn’t a realistic expectation for many people. However, you should try to incorporate some moderate exercise into your daily routine. If it’s possible, walk to work each day or go for a 20-30-minute stroll around your block when you get home. You should do more vigorous exercise two to three times a week, though, for the health of your heart.

De-Stress

Having good mental health is another important aspect of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. A positive attitude will also help you to maintain a good diet and regular exercise routine, as you will feel more motivated. If you find yourself feeling stressed or upset, take the time to do something that relaxes you, such as taking a hot bath or talking to a close friend. Meditation and other mindfulness exercises could help you with this, too.

It’s important to move towards a healthier lifestyle to reduce your chances of dealing with a serious illness like heart disease. If you’re worried about your health, try these suggestions to help you get healthy and stay that way.
